The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Goa Customs seized 928 grams of gold worth Rs 26.4 lakh at Dabolim International Airport on Wednesday.
According to AIU Superintendent Navin Patel, Goa Customs was maintaining a tight vigil on smuggling of gold in transit and gathered intelligence inputs and rummaged Air India Flight A1-994 upon its arrival at Goa International Airport on Wednesday.
During the course of inspection, customs officers found two small packets concealed in the safety airbag pocket of an unoccupied seat containing eight pieces of 10 Tola gold bars weighing 928 gms.
Based on their intelligence gathering, the AIU officers then questioned a suspicious passenger who was allotted the said seat. He confessed to the smuggling of gold and admitted to have changed his seat to outsmart the Customs officers.
The gold was seized under the provisions of the
Customs Act.
The whole exercise was conducted under the supervision of T R Gajalakshmi, Additional Commissioner of Customs and the overall guidance of R Manohar, Commissioner of Customs. Further investigation is under progress.
